They've spent the last four years training and eating carefully to make sure they were on top form for London 2012.So now that it's over, it's understandable some athletes would want to indulge before launching themselves into preparation for Rio 2016.
And many did just just that in the early hours this morning - heading down to the local McDonald's in Stratford straight after the closing ceremony finished.
GB men's four reserve rower Cameron Nichol took a picture of the crowd of athletes all queuing for a late night burger and fries.Next to the unlikely image of athletes descending on a fast food restaurant, he tweeted: 'Every athlete in the world wants a maccy d's...'
American track cyclist Bobby Lea also took a trip to McDonald's after the ceremony, tweeting alongside a picture at the chain: 'Post ceremony mob scene at McDonalds'.The company had gone under criticism for sponsoring a sporting event when it sells unhealthy fast food.
But that didn't seem to bother the athletes whose meals are free from the fast food chain within the Olympic village.Olympic champion rowers Hamish Bond and Eric Murray also made the most of the official sponsor giving free food to athletes. On their Twitter account @kiwipair they tweeted: 'Looks like some hungry athletes at @London2012 @Olympics #McDonalds'One Twitter user @ThisIsCayless said: 'All the athletes are probably buzzing from being able to eat free McDonalds since finishing their events.'Another, @Joe380, added: 'Guess McDonalds Stratford will be catering to the who's who of the #Olympic athletes tonight.'
